Love Shawzy but Hawks couldn't even afford him at $2.5mil AAV. Shaw is an inspiration as he is truly only 5'10" 180lbs but plays like he's 6'2" 215lbs. He can really skate, has underrated skill, lays the body on the forecheck, and was the Hawk's best (only) net front presence for the last few years. He scores a ton of goals in the dirty areas and on deflections. Considering some of the other contracts out there, its not "cheap" but he is well worth $3.9mil on a team that has the cap space. Wish him only the best, and I will leave you Habs fans with this....

That is Shaw man-handling Marchand in the 2013 Cup Finals. Great addition to your team as a guy who can play on ANY line, and at any position. He was the 1LW for the Hawks best stretch of the Regular Season last season and was also the 2C (between Saad+Kane) in the 2014 Playoff run that ended in Game 7 OT loss to the Kings. He can play effectively on any line. Not sure how the Hawks replace him, but am happy Debrincat fell to us with #39 from the Shaw deal.

Frank the salary cap.

In my opinion, this is a good signing. If he plays the same way he did in Chicago, he's worth every dollar.

Looking at the UFAs available on July 1st, I would welcome Andrew Ladd on a 3 year term. Another guy with a Stanley cup ring who's put up decent offensive numbers recently. I wonder how much he will be asking for though.

~2 million cheaper and for less term than what Brown has left on his contract now, but other than that, you are exactly right. EDIT: Brown has one less year left now.

This is a great signing for the Habs. Can skate with skilled players, plays multiple positions, and is exactly the mentality this lightweight squad needs in the playoffs.

I think you will enjoy watching Shaw this year. Ladd would provide size, experience & leadership. If you have to pay a little extra, he'd be worth it IMO.

Will be missed by Hawks just had no cap room. Heart and soul guy Montreal will love him. A lot more talent then some give him credit for. Can do so many things for a team. Glad he got a good payday.

That's allot of money & term for a 3rd line winger with heart that can play any position & for short periods of time a top line role. His best season ever was 20 goals & 41 points 3 years ago. Last season 14 goals & 34 points. He is a solid playoff point producer. Like the acquisition just don't like the salary or term. If were going to pay 3rd line wingers with character & heart 4 million a year the NHL is in trouble.

Little high on dollars but you are getting a great player. His momentum/energy/ass-hole-ness? (not a word?) has changed the outcome of games alone. I'll miss him down here in Chicago

Long time Hawks fan here. With the cap the way it is, no way to sign Shaw. SO sad. You will love him ! He plays the game of hockey the way it should be played. Heart and soul guy, with much more talent than people give him credit for. He will be a great addition to your team. You will love watching him play. The Hawks will miss him big time. Congrats on getting him on your team !

that's where we are headed... legit first line players are commanding $8-$9-$10 million. second liners are falling into the $5-$6 million range. so yeah, for effective veteran third liners, you're looking at the $3-$4 million range. ideally, you do what the Hawks do, which is develop Andrew Shaw, get what you can out of him for 4-5 cost effective years, and then when it comes time to pay him, let someone else do it, and you replace him from within. a team like Montreal which doesn't develop players very well needs to go out and acquire these assets, and this is what is costs.

Shaw is a solid shrewd move by the habs. I wouldn't have anything to complain about. Going up against Gallagher and shaw will be a pain in the arse

He'll add some character to the habs. Now they just have to resign Dale Weise.

Of all the players on the Blackhawks he's my favorite, the man never took a shift off, you guys got yourself a great competitor and every off season he works on his game. He does a great job of not taking bone head penalties which makes him a valuable grinder/instigator

I'm fine with Shaw as long as MB signs one of Eriksson, Ladd, Okposo, Lucic (preference in that order, though i can't imagine Lucic signing with the Habs). Term takes him through his peak years. Doesn't bother me.

With Gallagher, Carr and Shaw we can have 3 lines each with a pesky puck hound that'll drive the opposition crazy. Not a bad thing.

Still need at least one top 6 winger to play next to Plek and a top 2 Dman to play with Subban. Hopefully Sergachev develops into that guy, but in the meantime options are limited as Markov continues to age and I don't really see anybody in this lineup that can step into that role. Maybe Beaulieu... really liked how Barberio was playing, I'd like to see him given a chance in that role despite the fact he's more suited to the bottom four (like most of our D, it seems)

AAV: Overpayment
Term: Horrible
Pest: Sure
Playoff contributions: None if they don't make it

When this guy struggles to make 30 points a season and his possession plummets, Habs fans will see the light. The only saving grace is no NMC. You could've picked up Ladd for a little more money. But hey he's got two Stanley Cup rings!!!

Ladd will be looking for 6-7 mil long term (5-7 years) I figure.

I see Shaw as more of a shake-up. Better on the wing compared to Eller and we've got too many bottom 6 centers as it is (DD, McCarron, Danault, Mitchell...). Still, I'm not ecstatic about the trade/signing, but I don't think it's that bad either. As with everything, time will tell.
